You can type “HBD!!” in two seconds and move on, or you can send a line that makes them snort into their coffee. The gap between the two is one extra thought: what does this person laugh at, and what would sting? That thought is most of what makes funny birthday wishes work.
We read a lot of birthday jokes. Our teams in Africa film video greetings from messages people type into an order form (45,000+ since 2021), and every message gets read before filming. The spoken part is capped at 75 characters, and the jokes that fit it best are built on surprise, not on a jab. We turn down texts with profanity, and those are rarely the funny ones anyway.
Below are 100 original lines: wishes sorted by who they’re for, plus card lines, caption quotes, toasts and thank-you replies. At the end comes the part most lists skip: who you can tease about what.
Quick answer: how to write a funny birthday wish
Start with their name. Add one joke about the situation (the cake, the candles, the group chat, Mondays), not about their looks, age or bank account. Finish with one sincere line so it lands warm. For example: “Happy birthday, Kayla. I got you the one gift you can’t return: this text. Have a great day, you’ve earned it.”
- The name, so it’s clearly for them.
- One tease, aimed at the situation.
- The warm finish and your sign-off.
Funny birthday messages for anyone
These work for a neighbor, a classmate, a client or a group card for someone you’ve met twice. The joke targets shared circumstances, not the person, so nobody can take it personally.
Many lines in this article skip the opener so the punchline stands out. Put “Happy birthday, [name]” in front of any of them.
- “I hope this year beats the last one by at least one piece of good news. Ten would be nicer, but let’s be realistic.”
- “May luck find you before the bills do.”
- “Here’s to a year where your phone finally stops saying ‘Storage almost full.’”
- “May your unread emails drop below 3,000 and stop showing up in your dreams.”
- “I hope your alarm only goes off after you’re already awake and feeling smug about it.”
- “May every task you’ve rolled over to ‘next week’ quietly finish itself while you eat cake.”
- “Wishing you coffee stronger than Monday, and a Monday shorter than it looks.”
- “May your fridge always hold the leftovers you wanted, not the mystery container from last Tuesday.”
- “Happy birthday. Autocorrect wanted this to say ‘happy birdbath,’ and honestly, I wish you that too.”
- “May this be the year your weekend plans finally make it out of the group chat.”
Short funny birthday wishes for a text
In a text, one joke beats three: a long message gets skimmed and the punchline gets lost. Each of these one-line funny birthday wishes is 70 characters or less, so it also fits a card front, a caption or a short video message.
- “Your day, your rules, your cake. Sharing is optional.”
- “Celebrate so hard that Monday hears about it.”
- “I ordered you a good mood for your birthday. It’s out for delivery.”
- “Live this year so well the recap doesn’t fit in one text.”
- “May good things arrive on time and the rest get lost in the mail.”
- “Wishing you luck in places it usually saves for other people.”
- “Happy birthday. I’d have called, but we both know I don’t call.”
- “This text took me three drafts. You’re worth all of them.”
- “Eat the cake. Open the gifts. Ignore your inbox. Happy birthday.”
- “May your Wi-Fi be strong and your plans be lazy.”
- “Try to look surprised when we bring out the cake.”
- “Cake for breakfast is allowed today. I checked. Happy birthday.”
How long should a funny birthday message be?
Shorter than you think. Funny short birthday messages work because the joke arrives before attention runs out:
- Text or DM: 1–2 sentences. Friends, coworkers, distant relatives.
- Card: 3–5 sentences. Friends, family, group cards.
- Toast: 3–5 sentences, under a minute. The party.
Funny birthday messages for friends
Friends are the one group where you can bring up a shared disaster, tease a habit and call things what they are, as long as you’re laughing with them, not at them. Psychologist Rod Martin and colleagues, who mapped out humor styles in 2003, called the friendly kind “affiliative” and set it apart from aggressive humor built on putting someone down.
For your best friend
- “Happy birthday. I know how every one of your stories ends, and I still listen to the whole thing. That’s love.”
- “Happy birthday. I saved the list of promises you made yourself last year. Don’t worry, I’ll be checking.”
- “You’re the only person I can call at 2 a.m., and the only one who picks up just to tell me you’re asleep. Happy birthday.”
- “Happy birthday to the person who knows way too much about me. Let’s stay friends forever. For my own safety.”
- “Happy birthday to my favorite road trip co-pilot: terrible at directions, elite at snacks.”
- “Happy birthday. Let’s celebrate the way we always do: big plans at 7, couch by 9.”
For the group chat
- “Happy birthday, Sam. Brace yourself, the notifications are about to be relentless.”
- “Everyone say happy birthday to Sam before this chat goes back to arguing about where to eat.”
- “Happy birthday, Sam. On behalf of this chat, we promise to act normal for one whole day.”
One rule even for close friends: an inside joke is only funny to the people who were there. In a group chat where half the members missed the story, it turns into an awkward silence. In public, pick a joke everyone gets.
Funny birthday wishes for coworkers and your boss
At work, joke about work. Deadlines, meetings that could have been an email, the office coffee, reply-all and Saturday Slack pings are shared ground. Personal life, weight, salary and age stay off the table, even when you’re close.
For a coworker
- “Wishing you a year of tasks that come with actual instructions, not just ‘can you take a look?’”
- “May your meetings end before they start repeating themselves.”
- “May your PTO get approved on the first try and your out-of-office stay on all week.”
- “The office coffee is still bad, but at least today there’s cake.”
- “Your lunch is safe in the shared fridge today. Just today.”
For your boss
Humor aimed up the ladder is riskier than humor between peers. Teasing that’s friendly between equals can read as a dig at status when it’s aimed at the person who approves your PTO. Point the joke at the situation and the compliment at the person.
- “Thanks for not messaging us on a single Sunday this year. We noticed, and we appreciate it.”
- “Wishing you a team that understands you the first time. We’re working on it.”
- “May most of your decisions this year turn out right, and the rest stay between us.”
- “We know your calendar is packed, so this message is booked for 30 seconds. You’re welcome.”
- “Happy birthday to the kind of boss nobody complains about at happy hour. That’s rarer than you think.”
Funny birthday wishes for family
Family jokes don’t need inventing, only remembering: house habits, arguments that never end, phrases everyone knows by heart.
For mom
- “Happy birthday, Mom. You still remember what I ate in 2009, and I still can’t find my keys. The genes did not split evenly.”
- “Happy birthday, Mom. I’m not mad, I’m just asking: where have you been hiding the good scissors all these years?”
- “Happy birthday, Mom. I promise to call more often. You heard that last year, but this time I’m almost serious.”
For dad
- “Happy birthday, Dad. May every ‘I can fix it myself’ this year end with it actually fixed.”
- “Happy birthday, Dad. Thanks for teaching me two things: never give up, and never touch the thermostat.”
- “Happy birthday, Dad. Today you rest, and someone else stands at the grill pretending to know what they’re doing.”
For a brother or sister
- “Happy birthday. I used to tell on you, and now I cover for you. Think of it as a long-term investment.”
- “Happy birthday to Mom’s favorite. Kidding. We both know it’s me.”
- “Happy birthday. You can keep the hoodie you ‘borrowed’ in 2015. Consider it your gift.”
For grandma or grandpa
- “Happy birthday, Grandma. Your mac and cheese is the only reason I’d drive across town at rush hour.”
- “Happy birthday, Grandpa. Still undefeated at cards, and still pretending it’s luck.”
- “Happy birthday, Grandma. Your Facebook comments are my favorite part of the internet. Never stop signing them ‘Love, Grandma.’”
With older relatives, the number of years is not the joke. “Here’s to 100 more!” only sounds upbeat to the person writing it. Joke about their character, their famous dish or the way they win every card game instead.
Funny birthday messages for a husband, wife or partner
Tease couple life, not looks, and skip the “men are like this, women are like that” routine. Shared habits are funnier, because only the two of you know how accurate they are.
- “Happy birthday to the love of my life and the thief of my fries. I’ve made peace with both.”
- “For one night only, you get the whole blanket.”
- “Today you get the remote. Tomorrow the war resumes.”
- “Happy birthday to my favorite person to share a streaming password with. And a life.”
- “Today ‘five more minutes’ means whatever you want it to mean.”
- “Happy birthday to the person who argues with the GPS and somehow wins.”
The most personal joke belongs here, but anything you wouldn’t want read aloud at the party goes in a private text.
Funny things to write in a birthday card
A card gives you three to five sentences: setup, punchline, one sincere line, sign-off. The funny part can also live in the P.S. or the signature, which takes the pressure off everything above it.
Funny P.S. lines
- “P.S. This card is the gift. I know. You’re welcome.”
- “P.S. I spent 20 minutes in the card aisle for this one. Please laugh.”
- “P.S. The gift receipt is in the envelope, in case my taste hasn’t improved.”
- “P.S. If you’re reading this before the cake, you’re doing it wrong.”
- “P.S. I signed this for the whole office. They don’t know yet.”
Funny sign-offs
- “Your favorite sibling (don’t tell the others)”
- “Love, the friend who knows where the photos are”
- “From your desk neighbor and unofficial snack supplier”
- “Love you more than cake. Almost.”
- “Still your emergency contact, still not sorry”
Two-line rhymes for the inside of a card
A couplet gets read to the end; a long poem gets skimmed.
- “Roses are red, the frosting is blue. / I ate the first slice, but I saved one for you.”
- “I searched every card for a joke that fit you, / then gave up and wrote this. It’ll have to do.”
- “Here’s to a year where the meetings run short / and nobody asks for ‘one more quick report.’”
- “We’ve shared a back seat, a bathroom, the snacks. / You hogged all three. Happy birthday. I want the snacks back.”
Funny happy birthday quotes for captions and cards
Quote-style lines for an Instagram caption, a card front or a cake topper. They poke fun at birthdays in general, or at whoever is posting, never at the person being celebrated. We wrote them for this page, so use them anywhere without credit.
- “Birthdays: proof that cake counts as a plan.”
- “Calories don’t count when there are candles.”
- “Not older. Just more experienced at cake.”
- “Here for the cake. Staying for the people.”
- “Make a wish, then cut a bigger slice.”
- “Another year of pretending I know what I’m doing.”
- “Age is just a number. So is the number of slices I’m having.”
- “A birthday is the one day the group chat agrees on something.”
We left out famous quotes on purpose: funny happy birthday quotes often get pinned on celebrities who never said them.
Funny birthday toasts that fit while the glasses are up
A toast is a wish said out loud, so nobody can re-read it: one idea, three to five sentences, a raised glass at the end. The usual fail is starting too far back (“I first met Dave in 2014…”) and losing the room by minute two. A good toast is over before anyone’s arm gets tired.
- “Let’s raise a glass to Dana. It’s her birthday, and instead of lying on the couch opening presents, she’s feeding all of us. That’s either generosity or poor planning. Either way, to Dana!”
- “People say wisdom comes with age. Sometimes age just shows up alone. Here’s to Mike, and to both of them finally arriving together.” (Save this one for someone who makes age jokes first.)
- “My wish is simple: same table, same people, next year. Maybe a bigger table. To Priya.”
- “I’ll keep this short. We know Josh well enough to love him, and not well enough to tell all of it in front of his mom. To Josh.”
- “We’re all here tonight for one reason, and that reason is smiling, refilling glasses and pretending to be embarrassed. To Sam.”
If nobody wants to give the speech, a short video on the TV does the job: everyone watches and laughs together, and nobody has to improvise in front of twenty people.
Funny ways to say thanks for the birthday wishes
When the group chat fills up with wishes, one of these covers everyone at once:
- “Thanks for all the birthday wishes. My phone hasn’t buzzed this much since my bank flagged a pizza order.”
- “Thanks for remembering. I know Facebook reminded some of you, but I’m choosing to believe it was love.”
- “Thank you for the birthday love. I’ll be replying to each of you personally sometime before my next birthday.”
- “Thanks, everyone. My ego has officially outgrown this group chat.”
How to be funny without hurting anyone
A ready line is half the job; the other half is landing it on the right person. Psychologists Peter McGraw and Caleb Warren described the condition in Psychological Science in 2010 and called it a benign violation: a joke works when something is slightly “wrong” and feels safe at the same time.
Take away the “wrong” and you get a polite “Hope you have a great day.” Take away the safety and you get offense. So the closer a topic sits to a sore spot, the less chance the joke has.
Who you can tease about what
| Topic |
Works with |
Joke about this instead |
| Age: “over the hill,” retirement jokes |
Only someone who jokes about their own age first |
Experience: “knows too much to lose an argument” |
| Looks: weight, hair, wrinkles |
Almost no one |
Their style, signature look or habits |
| Money: salary, debt, “when you’re rich” |
Close friends in the same boat |
Plans and dreams, with no numbers |
| Exes and dating |
A best friend, in private only |
Their life now: the new hobby, the trip, the apartment |
The closeness scale
The further away someone is from you, the safer the topic has to be.
- Best friend: shared disasters, habits, calling things what they are.
- Friend or classmate: the situation, not the person.
- Coworker: work only.
- Boss: a joke about the situation, a compliment about the person.
- Older relative: warmth and character, nothing about age or health.
If you must joke about age
Age jokes are the easiest to write and the easiest to miss: they turn the party into “you got older,” and that’s a reminder, not a laugh. If they joke about it first, aim at experience:
- “Happy birthday. You know too much now to lose an argument, and frankly, it’s annoying.”
- “Happy 30th. You finally have enough stories to carry a whole dinner party.”
- “Happy 40th. You’re not getting older, you’re getting harder to impress.”
- “Happy 50th. Five decades of experience, and you still won’t share the chili recipe.”
Two questions before you hit send
Run the message past two questions. First: if someone wrote this to me, would I laugh, or just pretend to? Second: what happens if they read it out loud in front of their parents, partner or coworkers?
Funny messages outlive the day: they get forwarded, screenshotted and quoted a year later. That’s also why profanity is out. It rarely makes a line funnier, and it looks worse in a screenshot.
When the surprise is the joke: a birthday video from a team in Africa
Sometimes the format is the joke. The recipient expects a text and instead gets a birthday video from a team in Africa: a team in the DR Congo (or in Egypt, at the pyramids) says their name and dances. The laugh comes from surprise, not a jab, so it works even for the people you’d normally keep jokes gentle with: your boss, your grandma, your grandpa.
You get a 40–60 second MP4 by email, Telegram or WhatsApp. We film on the day of your order, and the file arrives from 2 hours after payment. Every package includes a spoken message of up to 75 characters, and the Hit package ($63) adds a chalkboard message of up to 60 characters, your own music and up to two printed A4 photos.
The team speaks English with an accent. The name and the main phrase are said clearly, so keep the message short. Every video is filmed by real people: no AI, deepfakes, auto-generation or green screen.
Funny lines that fit a video message
Spoken lines, 75 characters or less:
- “Happy birthday, Megan. Your brother paid for this, so act surprised.”
- “Happy birthday, Tyler. Josh says this counts as your gift. Josh is cheap.”
- “Happy birthday, Grandpa Joe. Please let someone else win at cards today.”
Board lines, 60 characters or less:
- “Happy birthday, Sam. Yes, this is the gift”
- “Grandpa Joe, card shark since forever”
- “Dana, today the meeting is about you”
Pick a team in the catalog, send us the name and your line, and we’ll handle the rest.
Text, card or video, the test is the same: pick the line you still smile at on the third read, and send it.
